It's been a while. Three months since the last time I wrote and suddenly i'm into my ninth (NINTH) month in Spain, making it three-quarters of the way to a full blown year!! It's going by so fast I can't believe it. And these last three months... so much has happened, so much has come and gone and so much more still to come.Read More
I'm back. I was about to write "back to this hell-hole" because anywhere out-of-reach from Mumma's magical foods is kind of like hell but ok I'll stop over-exaggerating. And also it's officially not so true anymore because today all my things from home got delivered to my apartment this very morning!!
After the never-ending packing ordeal that we carried out as soon as the christmas festivities were over, everything was picked up on Saturday and at last, since I opened the first box at 9am, things don't feel as temporary as they used to. It helps that I'm not living out of only 2 suitcases worth of things like I was for the past 4 months too. People have asked and thought it odd that I waited so long but the real truth was that I just didn't have the time/couldn't face the music to pack up everything I wanted to bring over before I left at the end of August. And now, at least now that I've kind of settled a bit, I managed to pack most of the things I know are harder/expensive to find (3+ boxes might have been filled with food) and the things I actually needed over here instead of just shipping my whole life over and not having the space for it when the majority of the lot is just what I've accumulated and hoarded with no real purpose over the years.
It's going to take a long while to unpack, put away and organise the apartment but at least I have something to do when I'm stuck inside now that I seem to have returned to the some of the most horrendous rain I've ever encountered - the weather forecast for the following week is not looking so promising either. But whatever, it could be worse. And I might have even missed my apartment a little since I've been away. Actually I think I only realised it when I came back a couple of nights ago. So for as long as my short attention span can manage, this weekend's gonna be dedicated to making it a better home. My home away from home. For now.
On the first evening we arrived, Harley and I went for walk along the beach and around a few streets in the town. It was a small attempt to just get our baring and to see the area in the calm and quiet of the night. And perhaps because I was tired and perhaps because I saw the street clock tell us it was 11pm already (and perhaps I forgot that it would have only been 10pm back home) my mind got a little lazy and when we walked up to a small part of the pavement that went out a little on to the beach just touching the sea line, I blurted out "oh look there's a pier!" and Harley made a funny face. But since that very first night, that small part of the pavement that goes a little out towards the sea, between us at least, has been known as "the pier".
And so it began; every new landmark or interesting looking building/sculpture/other we've come across has been renamed for the benefit of our own ignorance and it's a sad truth that it's been one of the only things I've been able to properly commit to memory. Most places we were initially unaware of what they actually were, often seeing them from a distance, hence the conclusion to make up our own names but then there are a few that we learnt of later on but I think our names are better.
So far, here is our guide :
o The Pier // the small part of the pavement that goes out towards the beach
o The Funny Pasta Shop // self-explanatory - more of a reference point
o The Lighthouse // the Tower of Hercules
o The Horn // a giant horn sculpture near The Lighthouse
o The Torch // a building that looks like a giant torch from a distance
o The Cafe in the Middle // another reference point
o The Sydney Opera House // the football stadium (!) facing the beach front
o The Needle // the needle sculpture on the other side of Coruña
o The Mountain // Monte de San Pedro
o The Spaceship // the museum atop The Mountain
o The Millennium Dome // a green lookalike - it's purpose yet to be discovered
o Scotland // an old castle on the harbour side
o Stone Henge // a Stone Henge lookalike
