It's so strange to think that already it's been 2 weeks here. I feel like I mentally discounted the first week because I hadn't even started in the studio yet and everything kind of felt poo. Except for the weekend. This week though, oh my it's flown by so fast I can't even believe how much actually happened.
After I got my computer log-in at work, things suddenly started moving and I think (I hope!) there will be a lot of exciting things to look forward to in the next few months!
I FOUND AN APARTMENT!!
Well it kind of found me and I was just super lucky that timing was on my side for the first time in a long time. I had a stressful couple of days at the beginning of the week trying to flat hunt. By which I mean I spent a whole day saving all these apartment ads on to my computer and then realising that without any decent Spanish language in me that I had no idea what to do next. Even the estate agents didn't speak any English. I spoke to Eddie* and he offered to help me and set up 5 viewings for me this week because he's simply THE BEST.
* Eddie is another newbie working for ZARA Man and is from Australia but he studied in Barcelona and his boyfriend is from Madrid so he's fluent in Spanish and I've kind of just appointed him as my personal translator for now.
Then James called me and told me he was leaving to take on a new job in China and would I like to see his apartment?! And ohmygod it was SO BEAUTIFUL. Partly because of the way he furnished it and partly because of it's location in the Old Town and partly because he's lived in it for the whole 2.5 years he's been here and so I had a feeling that it must have been super great because he already said last week that he loved his place. The size is a dream and so is the price and there's even a balcony!! So I'm taking it. And I've got it! Well I´m signing the contract next week and then moving in at the very beginning of October.
Friday was a shorter day at work and we finished at 3pm but it's the last week of those summer hours so it will be a 7pm finish everyday from now on. We went for an "early" dinner at 9pm at the best restaurant for pulpo (octopus) in town, conveniently located only a 5 minute walk from the company apartments. The menu was in Galician** which wasn't even recognised on Google Translate when Kaska tried. We worked out and ordered calamari and padron peppers (the only 2 things on the menu we could understand) and asked for the traditional puplo, boiled and served in olive oil and paprika with potatoes, everything to share.
** A Coruña is the largest city in Galicia, the north-western province of Spain, and so the official languages here are Spanish and Galician.
I actually headed home early while the others went on to a cocktail bar because I had plans to have breakfast with James and I wanted to go for a run. Except I woke up at 10.30am and when I checked my phone, James had messaged me at 8.30am to rearrange to lunch because he'd only just got home from a night out!
So I took my time and spent about 5 minutes working out the best way to tie my keys into my laces and went for my first run since I arrived. I thought it would help me get into it to listen to my running playlist from a year or so ago (when I was super into running and going almost every other day) and it kind of worked except it was a tragedy to my ears. At least the beats were OK and I could hold my pace. I ran along the beach and towards and passed (not ready for that monster of a hill yet) the Tower of Hercules to another cliff's edge with a horn sculpture. I did my stretches overlooking the sea and ran back to the apartment. I watched the surfers riding the waves on the way back and suddenly it hit me that I was actually breathing in salty air and running along the beach and stretching on a cliff and holy moly I felt invincible!!
Last night, I finally made it! I WENT OUT OUT THE SPANISH WAY!!
We had dinner at 10pm and then met James and a whole lot of other ZARA people at a bar along the harbour for his leaving drinks. I think it was already past midnight at this point. And then we all went to some crazy place called BRIT that was inside a huge building that looked like a shopping mall except there were other clubs in there too. It was kind of funny and gross and incredible all at the same time and I felt like I was back at uni again on a first night out. The music was so good. By which I mean super cheesy and mostly hip-pop and RnB but literally the best thing to dance off all the alcohol to. We left at 5.30am and I got home around 6am.
It was the best night (and morning) yet for sure.
